The Graduate Skilled Visa subclass 485 provides international students with the ability to temporarily live and work in Australia after completion of their Australian studies. Depending on the degree(s) pursued, this visa may be granted for up to 4 years (5 years for Hong Kong passport holders). There are three streams of Skilled Visa Subclass 485:

  • The Graduate Work Stream, 
  • The Post Study Work Stream and 
  • The Second Post Study Work Stream.

Skilled Visa Subclass 485

Starting in mid-2022, a new Covid-19 Replacement Stream will also be available. Your eligibility is determined by the level of education you have obtained in Australia as well as the timing of your original student visa application and approval.

1. Graduate Work Stream:

International students who graduate with credentials related to a profession on the number of eligible skilled occupations list are best suited for this stream. A visa is available to them for a maximum of 24 months.

In the Graduate Work stream, you may apply for this visa if you:

  • Are at least 18 years of age and younger than 50 years of age;
  • Nominate an occupation on the eligible skilled occupations list for the 485 visas;
  • Have been assessed by a relevant assessing authority as suitable for your nominated occupation;
  • Have the relevant English language ability;
  • Hold a degree, diploma, or trade qualification in a field closely relevant to the skilled occupation you have chosen, and.
  • Have completed at least 92 weeks of CRICOS-registered courses, the Australian Study Requirement, in the previous six months. (New rules for the Australian Study Requirements: Due to COVID-19, current holders of student visas who are enrolled in online courses outside of Australia may use their coursework to satisfy the Australian study requirement for a post-study work visa.

2. Post Study Work Visa Stream:

With an eligible qualification and recent graduation, international students can apply for a visa under this stream that can last up to four years (automatic 5 years for Hong Kong passport holders).

You can apply for this visa in the Post Study Work Visa Stream if you:

  • Are at least 18 years of age and younger than 50 years of age;
  • You can apply for and were granted your first student visa to Australia; on or after 5 November 2011;
  • Acquire a recent (within the last six months) qualification from an Australian educational institution;
  • Have the relevant English language ability
  • Have completed the minimum 92 weeks of CRICOS-registered courses necessary for Australian study in the previous six months.

The length of the visa granted depends on the completion of:

  • masters by research: 3 years
  • doctoral degree: 4 years
  • bachelor’s degree (including honors): 2 years
  • masters by coursework: 2 years
  • Hong Kong passport holders who successfully complete a bachelor, master’s, or doctoral degree: 5 years

3. Second Post Study Work Visa Stream:

Those with a first Temporary Graduate Visa in the post-study job stream who got their degree from an Australian institution based in a regional location on the following will be eligible for a second stay period of one or two years:

  1. The regional location of the institution where you received your first post-study visa and completed your studies.
  2. Region where you resided while you were on your first temporary graduate stream visa after finishing your studies.

You may be given this visa for a year if you previously resided and attended school in a Category 2 regional area. You may be given this visa for two years if you previously resided and attended school in a Category 3 regional area.

Category 2 – Perth, Adelaide, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Canberra, Newcastle/Lake Macquarie, Wollongong/Illawarra, Geelong, and Hobart are all considered “Cities and Major Regional Centers.”

Category 3 – regional areas and regional centers (Include Designated regional area postcodes as per the Designated regional area postcodes).
