NER Work Experience Statement for Engineers Australia

The National Engineering Register (NER) is a prestigious body representing Australian engineers who adhere to the highest standards of professionalism within the industry. Engineers Australia introduced NER as the official registration framework to connect engineering professionals with rewarding opportunities. Being listed in the NER directory boosts your credibility and attracts attention from esteemed employers, showcasing your engineering expertise and experience.

Guidelines for Engineers to get registered in NER

Below are the guidelines for Engineers in Australia who are interested in registering with the National Engineering Register (NER) through Engineers Australia:

    1. Chronological Order

The work experience statement should be presented chronologically, starting with the most recent and relevant experiences.

    2. Relevant and Recent Experience First

Emphasize recent and relevant experiences that align with the engineering field.

    3. Roles, Responsibilities, and Achievements

Clearly outline the roles and responsibilities held during each position and the critical achievements and accomplishments.

    4. Conciseness for Past Positions

If the work history is lengthy, keeping descriptions of past positions brief is advisable.

    5. Key Achievements

Highlight critical achievements, including projects, systems, products, programs, services, problems faced, opportunities encountered, and contributions to quality improvements.

    6. Special Skills or Knowledge

Include information on specific skills or knowledge that led to successful outcomes, actions taken to address situations (including innovation and creativity), and any extra duties undertaken.

It’s important to note that when preparing a NER Work Experience Statement, applicants should carefully follow the specific guidelines provided by Engineers Australia.

    Referees details

Referees play a crucial role in verifying an applicant’s work experience and professional competence.

Below are the requirements for selecting referees when applying for registration with the National Engineering Register (NER) through Engineers Australia.

    1. Referee Qualifications

Referees should have an engineering degree and at least five years of experience in the applicant’s area(s) of practice.

    2. Preference for Chartered Members

It is preferable for referees to be Chartered members of Engineers Australia or hold equivalent qualifications.

    3. Referee Selection

Two referees are required. One of them must be from the applicant’s current employer. If the applicant has been with the current employer for more than five years, both referees may be from the current employer. Otherwise, the second referee may be from a previous employer within the last five years.

    4. Professional Relationship

The applicant should have a professional relationship with the referees. Potential referees include supervisors, mentors, senior colleagues, engineering clients, or external mentors. However, they cannot be just a friend from the workplace or elsewhere.

    5. Referee Details

For each referee, the applicant needs to provide the following details:

    • Title
    • Given Name
    • Surname
    • Organization
    • Position/Title
    • Professional Relationship
    • Phone

    6. Exceptional Circumstances

In some exceptional cases, such as the relocation of potential referees or recent migration to Australia, applicants may be unable to provide referee details. In such situations, applicants can submit a Statutory Declaration that attests to their work experience and career history.

Applicants must carefully adhere to the requirements of Engineers Australia when choosing and providing referee details.

Any updates or changes to these guidelines should be verified through the official Engineers Australia website or documentation.

Professional Referee Statement by Statutory Declaration

In exceptional circumstances, if for a genuine reason (e.g. relocation of a potential referee or you recently moved to Australia from overseas) you are unable to provide referee details you may submit an adequately witnessed Statutory Declaration in place of a referee statement. The Statutory Declaration should speak that work experience statement tells about your current competence and career history.
